Curse of the Crimson Throne

Long Live the Queen?
1st Chapter, 2nd Session

Two days after the riots broke out and the group dispatched Gaedren, the streets have finally clamed down enough to make travel towards the castle a somewhat safe prospect. After securing a few rooms for another day in which to house the children while they paid their respects to the Queen and returned her broach, the group made their way toward the castle.

Along the way, they encountered a group of peasants intent on extracting a blood price from a Noble. Serafina attempted to persuade the "good people" from their act using reason, but to no avail. They did however let the noble man go and set off on their way to cause further mischief. The noble rewarded the group with a ring for helping to spare his life.

Their arrival at the castle was met with armed guard, but they were soon led inside (albeit without their weapons or Petrov) after the broach was presented.

Within the castle they met the beautiful (though scarred) bodyguard/handmaiden of the queen. She introduced them to the queen, who was resplendent even in her grief. Looking at her it was clear to them all why the known letch of a king would have forsaken all other women for her.

The queen rewarded them with a lovely silver box full of gold trade bars, and asked that they meet with the captain of the guard at Citadel Volshynek.  After picking up their equipment and reuniting with Petrove they made their way towards the Citadel, though a conflict between Imps and the House Drakes caught them all by surprise and left them battling the fierce and poisonous Imps.

And So Our Story Begins....
1st Chapter, 1st Session

It began with a card.

Or, more specifically, 4 cards. One Harrow card each for our four vengeful entities:  Marcus, the Knight; Valtyra, the Unicorn; Grez, the Rakshasha; and Serafina, the Idiot. The cards held a message, the key to each of them seeking revenge for a great wrong that had been done them.

These four made their separate ways to the home of the one who had gathered them. Zellara, a Varisian fortune teller of little means, was not present as the group arrived one by one. She had left a note, and a basket with bread and wine for the four of them. After she finally arrived, they discovered the source of their pain and fury had been hiding under their noses all along. He was, in fact, only a 10 minute walk from there.

Gaedren Lamm. That horrendously vile, devious and most crafty of ner'do-wells.  The sole entity which tied their four fates together. Each of them had lost something (or someone) to his wickedness. The hunt was on.

Approaching his hideaway, they set about trying to determine the best course of action. Marcus, Valtyra and her companion, Azazel, snuck around the side of the building for a better look… Until the dock snapped beneath their weight sending Valtyra and Azazel into the waters.

And the waiting jaws of a hungry shark.

After the creature had been dispatched, they made their way along a boardwalk to a locked door. Within they discovered their target, Gaedren Lamm, and his monstrous reptilian beast. As Petrov fought the creature, nearly loosing life and limb to its crushing jaws. The others fought their quarry and both beasts were dispatched, though everyone felt he died far too quickly.

Though a gruesome discovery was made within his sleeping chamber, other more wondrous discoveries were to be had as well. Along with the head of the woman who had gathered them together (which had been desecrated in a most foul fashion), Grez found a ledger which contained the answer to his full and final acquittal; and Valtyra found the long lost ring of her beloved.

Searching the rest of Fishery they dispatched the rest of Gaedren's men and Serafina rescued nearly a dozen orphans. She seemed instantly found of a small child no more than two years of age and a growing lad of 12 who is very bright and sharp witted.

As they made their way back to the Fortune Teller's home, a gaggle of children in tow, sounds of rebellion erupted in the streets. The king was dead, and the Queen now ruled in his steed.

It was a dangerous journey, the short distance back to her small abode, but they made it safely. Within they were greeted by her spirit, and she offered to assist them, if they would help defend their city in the days ahead. They agreed, and she offered them safe shelter with her friends.

The group holed up in an inn not far from her home, Serafina paying for their lodgings and food. And there they waited out the rebellion, until they could safely make their way to the crimson castle of the newly widowed Queen.

The book of adventures

The king is in failing health. The queen is a harlot with no love for the city. So what else is new? Ever since King Eodred II took the young Chelish aristocrat Ileosa as a bride at the nubile age of seventeen, the spend-thrift king has brought the city state deeper and deeper into civil unrest. It doesn't help that the guard is stretched to the breaking point maintaining even the most basic sense of order, especially in decaying Old Korvosa. Crime and vice run rampant, which can be seen either as a stain upon the virtue of the city, or as a ripe opportunity for the reorganization of power. It depends on where your priorities – and morality - lie.

Some among you have always known that life in Korvosa was a harsh reality. The life of an orphan is never an easy one – especially not when you're forced into indentured servitude as many are. Worse yet if you try and fight against those who would see you under their thumb. In Korvosa, there is no justice for the silent – and children are all but invisible.

Others have felt its sting through those they love – torn away from them as the city continues to destroy the unfortunate like meat through a butcher's grinder. There was nothing those left behind could have done to stop it – but it makes the sting no less potent as they try to reconcile their grief and find only unrelenting emptiness in the place of those they dared to care so much about.

Still more find themselves taken from the lives they lived, where they might not have sought virtue, but at least were not wicked, suddenly dragged down into the mud where the refuse of the city dwell. Words can be far mightier than the sword when all that you lived for is torn away from you by the cruelty of them. The role of pariah was not meant for them, and yet they find themselves the scapegoat for all those in the city who seek someone to blame for their woes.

Though many wretches crawl the dark places of Korvosa, few compare to the depravity of the crime lord Gaedren Lamm. With enough wiles to remain uncaught for a lifetime and a cruel streak to challenge the dark princes themselves, Gaedren has lived to make himself into a true menace of the city. Like a rat in a sewer he manages not to be found… but justice is persistent and many pray that someone, someday, will bring their wrath to bear against him.

Do any exist in this city who take such a challenge? We will see…
